The 2020 Armed Forces Day cross-band test from NSS did not take place in 2020, but in 2021 there were enough operators that had received the COVID-19 vaccine that it made a safe operating environment for the 2021 event. NSS contact totals per assigned frequency 4 MHz 1035 MHz 2477 MHz 2139 […]

K3SAV – The Nuclear Ship Savannah
On a couple of occasions in 2019 I was invited to operate from the Nuclear Ship Savannah, which at that time was docked in Baltimore undergoing decommissioning work. The vessel was the first nuclear powered passenger ship ever built, and in her operational life carried passengers and cargo. Owned by the U.S. Government she was […]
NSS – Armed Forces Day 2019
This special event was something very different. In fact NSS was not transmitting on amateur radio frequencies, but had a licence to transmit on Navy frequencies while listening to the nearest amateur radio band for the 68th annual Armed Forces Day Crossband Test. It was held on 11th May and I had the pleasure of […]
GC4FOC – 80th Anniversary of FOC
As part of the FOC 80th Anniversary Challenge I was able to activate GC4FOC from various locations in Wales during the month. My planning for the FOC80 activity was frantic at times and I was keen that every one of the seven UK&CD regions be represented during the month. For various reasons covering Wales was […]

In 2018 the month of May saw the 80th anniversary of The First Class CW Operators Club, FOC. During the month the club had various special calls on the bands during an activity challenge run by the club. I was able to arrange the call GB80FOC and had the pleasure of activating it for 4 […]

MO0PCB – London Olympics 2012
During 2012 London hosted the Olympic and Paralympic Games. Ofcom authorised the use of a special prefix character O throughout the period to celebrate this. In total 925 QSOs were made, mostly CW, and all QSOs were sent a special QSL card. Logs are also on Clublog and LoTW.
MQ0PCB – The Diamond Jubilee
The MQ prefix had previously been authorised in 2002 for the Golden Jubilee of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II. In 2012 it was authorised again and I was active as MQ0PCB for a second time. In 2012 just over 300 QSOs were made using RTTY and CW on the bands. All QSOs were sent the […]
GB0KLM – Killhope Lead Mine
While I was an active member of the Bishop Auckland Radio Amateurs Club we were active annually for the Mills On The Air weekend from the Killhope Lead Mine at the top end of Weardale. We operated from the building next to the water mill at the museum.
